Gallery 924 is pleased to present Appropriated Voyeurism, an interactive, multimedia installation by Indianapolis based artist Phil O’Malley. The abundance and immediacy of images has become overwhelming at times as it floods all aspects of contemporary life. Photos, videos, social media posts, advertisements, graphics, and logos dominate our view while clouding the lines between what is public and private. After mining our last century’s tour of imagery, Appropriated Voyeurism exploits image inundation while exploring the instigation of our accidental exhibitionism. If you have posted something online, it might be in this exhibition.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Phil O’Malley, a professional studio artist and designer in Indianapolis, IN, was born in Massachusetts, and has spent the past four decades painting in the
Midwest. After making his way to Indiana, he studied Interior Design in the Purdue School of Engineering and earned a BFA from the Herron School of Art and Design. Phil has created two- and three-dimensional works in fine art, culinary art, interior design, architectural design, graphic design, and event design.

Gallery 924 presents The Art Assignment Show, a group exhibition exploring the diverse responses to the popular online video series produced in partnership with PBS Digital Studios and hosted by curator Sarah Urist Green. The exhibition will include work from Indianapolis based artists Brian McCutcheon, Nathaniel Russell, and Arts Council Creative Renewal Arts Fellow Lauren Zoll who have been featured in the PBS series and shared their own art assignments with the world. Gallery 924 has collected responses to these artists’ assignments from artists in surrounding states, and they will be displayed alongside McCutcheon, Russell, and Zoll’s work in Gallery 924.
The Art Assignment is a weekly educational video series hosted by Green and focuses on the creative process and the act of making. The series introduces viewers to innovative, emerging and established artists and art making approaches, challenges them with creative art assignments, and demystifies contemporary art for broad audiences by exploring art history through the lens of the present. Green travels around the U.S. to meet with artists in order to obtain assignments from them based on their own art practice.
Each video serves as an open call for makers across the globe who can then complete work on their own and share online. A vibrant community of participants has grown around the series, and thousands of artworks have been made and shared socially and through the series.
The exhibition will feature responses to The Art Assignment’s videos from Indiana artists Brian McCutcheon, Lauren Zoll, and Nat Russell. In McCutcheon’s Customize It, viewers were asked to find a common object that they found interesting, make a list of identifying traits about that object, and customize the object while thinking about one of those traits. Zoll’s Off, challenged artists to turn off a screen on any device, take a photo of only the screen (excluding human forms), and think about the color, pattern, and form. In Fake Flyer, Nathaniel Russell asked artists to create a flyer or poster that gave advice, shared something about their life, or promoted an imagined event.
Interested in taking part in an art assignment? On opening night, Gallery 924 patrons can take Russell’s challenge, and create and hang their own Fake Flyer at a flyer-making station.

Kyle Ragsdale grew up in Texas and New Mexico, witnessing from a young age a mix of vibrant cultures and large wild spaces. For 15 years since earning degrees at Baylor University (BFA) and Southern Methodist University (MFA), Kyle has been painting full time, working periodically as a decorative painter and stage set designer, and making fine art. He has served as curator for exhibits in Texas and Indiana and currently is curator for the Harrison Center for the Arts, Indianapolis. This May, Gallery 924 presents new work by Kristy Hughes in Seeing is Forgetting. Kristy Hughes’ current body of work is about following curiosities, discovering the potential in limited materials, and bringing to the surface the underlying systems that organize and inform chaos.
Hughes starts each piece by laying down one simple mark, gesture, or color on paper. Using monotype, woodcut, and paint, she purposely makes a mess, something that does not aesthetically make sense, to create chaos. Once the disordered composition builds up, she slashes through the thick layers using an X-Acto knife and begins to reveal what lies underneath. She deconstructs, sometimes aggressively with a sander, and other times bymeditatively peeling small pieces of paper by hand. She starts the process over again–adding and taking away, hiding and revealing. She organizes and structures the composition that started from a simple, intuitive mark. She “fixes” the mess, and the composition is finished when the work lies somewhere between chaos and control.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Kristy Hughes is an artist and printmaker, who received her MFA in Printmaking from Indiana University in 2015. Over the past few years, Hughes has exhibited in over 60 shows. She was an artist-in-residence at Vermont Studio Center in July 2015, where she was awarded a full fellowship. Hughes is currently an artist-in-residence at the Stutz Artists Association in Indianapolis, Adjunct Professor of Art & Culture I at Ivy Tech Community College in Terre Haute, and Part-time Assistant Professor of Drawing at DePauw University in Greencastle. She has a cactus named Cilantro and a gecko named Pepperoni.

Artist Talk: April 14, 6 pm
Shawn Causey and Mark Daniell have collaborated on multiple projects including two large scale pieces in downtown Indianapolis–one constructed and one painted, both carrying the central color theory themes which are the basis of their public work. Sweet Spot continues this color investigation as the artist team constructs their most immersive piece to date. They will fill Gallery 924 with approximately 3,000 multicolor nylon cords hanging from ceiling to floor, creating a unified composition that brings color rhythms and patterns into three dimensions.
Visitors will be encouraged to discover a myriad of perspectives created by the installation by moving around and throughout the piece itself. The viewer will see shimmering rhythmic patterns as cords at different depths of field seem to float past each other. Observing new color harmonies from every vantage point enables the viewer to find their own “sweet spot”–a unique experience of resonating color relationships.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Both natives of Indianapolis, Shawn Causey and Mark Daniell grew up on the city’s north side. Causey, an Arts Council of Indianapolis Creative Renewal Arts Fellow, received degrees in art and music from Herron School of Art and Design and Butler University respectively. Daniell received a degree in philosophy and religious studies from Butler University. He has a background in carpentry, fine woodworking, and jewelry making.
