“I am so grateful to the Arts Council of Indianapolis and Lilly Endowment Inc. for this opportunity to renew and revive my creative life. What began as a recharging of my professional creative batteries evolved into a realignment of how I approach my life. This cumulative experience has encouraged me to be innovative and take new risks in my professional work.”

Serving as the Senior Exhibit Designer at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Craig has the unique opportunity of bringing exhibits to life. “My goal with each exhibit experience is to transport visitors to another place and time allowing them to connect with the subject matter in a deeply personal way. An exhibit must work for families and school groups, and survive wear/tear from millions of visitors.” For his renewal, he wanted to explore the works of two creative geniuses, architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who worked until his death at ninety one, and Disney Imagineer John Hench, who spent over sixty years at The Walt Disney Company. Craig was excited to research and experience their work, and incorporate their vision into his artistic process.

Craig experienced Frank Lloyd Wright’s work during seven separate trips, visiting fourteen sites in six states. He read extensively on Frank Lloyd Wright and consulted with Linda Eales, curator of Samara house in West Lafayette, Indiana. He visited Frank Lloyd Wright sites in California, Arizona, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin. He was able to study John Hench’s work extensively while he was in California at Disneyland. Craig tried to find ways of experiencing nature through his journey. He loved the scenery on a convertible driving trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco; spent a day at the Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park; canoed and walked along Mirror Lake State Park; and saw a Dale Chihuly installation at sunset at the Desert Botanical Garden. These trips allowed him to recharge his design process and gain a new perspective on his daily life.
