Our November 24 concert celebrates the 150th anniversary of the birth of the American composer, Charles Ives (1874-1954), with the performance of his Symphony No. 2. This work was written at the very end of the 19th century and was premiered over 50 years later in 1951 by Leonard Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic. Many popular American songs are alluded to in this work, including “Columbia, Gem of the Ocean.” Completing the program are “No. 1, Jubilee” from Symphonic Sketches by George Chadwick (1854-1931) and Generations: Sinfonetta No. 1 for String Orchestra, II. Alla sarabande by Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson (1932-2004). Join conductor Orcenith Smith for at pre-concert talk at 2:30 p.m. The concert starts at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are available on line at www.philharmonicindy.org or at the box office. Prices range from $10-$25. Children under 6 are free.
