Artsgarden Summer Sessions: Christopher Pitts & Emma Hedrick

Celebrate the arrival of summer as talented local jazz, hip hop, classical, and experimental artists breathe vibrant energy into the Indianapolis Artsgarden. All performances are free and open to the public. Parking is available in the Circle Centre Mall garages.

Christopher Pitts

Pianist composer and educator, Christopher Pitts, is focused on connecting the deep roots of the jazz piano tradition with modern sensibilities through energetic performance, thoughtful collaboration, and aesthetic focused compositions. Christopher has been honored to be an Art and Soul Alumni, Gritty Vibes Magazine 2021 Top 30 “Black Creative To Watch”, and received the “Awesomeness Award” nomination for his production for Spirit and Place Festival.


Christopher has just released his debut sound concept “BE FREE” during a residency at the historic Cliff Bells jazz club in Detroit. Christopher has recently been featured with several local and international acts including Lauren Henderson (2024 Tidal Artist to Watch) Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Sarah Reich and Tap Music Project, Lonnie McFadden, Sean Imboden Large Ensemble, The Tucker Brothers, Premium Blend and Rob Dixon Triology.


Emma Hedrick

Emma Hedrick is a 7-time DownBeat award-winning, vocalist, composer, and bandleader from the Indianapolis area. She began her musical career as a part of the Indianapolis Children’s Choir while in elementary school. She then got her start in jazz in the Butler Youth Jazz Program and the Indy Jazz Futures led by Rob Dixon, the “musical-mayor” of Indianapolis. She won third place in the International Ella Fitzgerald Vocal Competition in 2019 and her compositions have won Honorable Mention in the Jazz Education Network’s Young Composer Showcase (2023) as well as Semi-Finalist in the International Songwriting Competition (2023).

Emma is passionate about jazz education and has worked as a Teaching Assistant for the Butler Jazz Camp, the Miami Children’s Choir, and the Royal Conservatoire jazz choir while maintaining a private studio. She received her Bachelor’s in Music from the University of Miami, Frost School of Music as a Presser Scholar and will graduate with her Master’s in Music this summer from the Royal Conservatoire in the Hague. She has performed across the country and in Europe including local institutions such as the Jazz Kitchen, Indy Jazz Fest, and Elkhart Jazz Festival as well as in the Telluride Jazz Festival (Colorado), the St. Petersburg Jazz Festival (Florida), Baryshnikov Arts Center (NYC), and on tour with the Jong Metropole Orchestra in the Netherlands and Germany.
