Daughter of the King is a reflective journey of four women trying to hold fast to the wisdom of their lineage, the King’s decree, while battling societal ills, tests, trials, laws, loss, and love. Tasha Jones embodies the spirit of ancestry and futurity, channeling the strength of generations, tracing the lineage of the King’s daughter through the bowels of oppression with an indomitable spirit of survival in a powerful performance that blends storytelling, poetry, art, spirituality, and song. This evocative journey takes you through four pivotal epochs—Pyramids, Plantations, Projects, and Penitentiaries—highlighting a narrative of recovery and resilience that resonates deeply.

The performance’s power lies in its transformative ability to honor the past, inspire the present, and guide the future. It symbolizes and acknowledges the ancient power of the spoken word and the ability to transform any environment, including enslavement, medical experimentation, and incarceration. The show’s magic reveals the divine panoply of God, shields the soul and spirit, transcending systemic oppression and the tyranny of each era—Pyramids, Plantations, Projects, and Penitentiaries. It offers a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us of the unshakable promise of spiritual guidance and protection.

The audience is not a passive observer but an integral part of the transformative journey of reflection and reclamation, which is DOTK. The performance beckons us to remember that the divine essence within us remains unbowed and that the soul, shielded by the sacred, will always prevail.

TASHA JONES Q&A

Is this a new show?
Yes, this is a new show that I have developed. While the themes and inspirations draw from timeless experiences, the way the story is told—through the unique fusion of poetry, music, movement, and song—is fresh and original.

What was the process?
The process involved extensive research, personal reflection, and collaboration with other artists. It required looking back at cultural histories, engaging with personal narratives, and shaping them into a cohesive performance that speaks to universal themes.

What does your academic world and your performance world bring to your performances?
My academic background enriches my performances by providing historical context, theoretical frameworks, and analytical depth, while my performance experience brings raw emotion, authenticity, and engagement with diverse audiences. Together, they create a rich, multidimensional experience for viewers.

TASHA JONES
“Tasha Jones is a rare and wonderful artist who strikes a balance in a world so often lopsided. She has the soul of a Nikki Giovanni draped in the Haute Couture fashions of a runway model. Jones is a student of life and a teacher of lessons. On stage, she tells the story of her life and, in doing so, tells the story of all women, a story of love, loss, and life. She offers a perspective, poignancy, and insight in her writing that allows men to see themselves through her work and women to see themselves in her work. She proves herself to be simultaneously what women are and what they aspire to be. Once you’ve experienced her for yourself, you will feel better, wiser, and are enriched by it.” — Jon Goode.Jon Goode is an Emmy-nominated author, poet, and playwright who lives in Atlanta, Georgia. He is the regular host of The Moth Story SLAM and a featured performer on HBO’s Def Poetry, TVOne’s Verses & Flow, and Bet’s Lyric Café.
