Remember, remember the 5th of November . . .
The Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was a failed attempt by a group of English Catholic conspirators to assassinate King James I and blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening of Parliament. The plot aimed to end Protestant rule and replace it with Catholic leadership. The conspirators, including the infamous Guy Fawkes, had smuggled 36 barrels of gunpowder into a cellar beneath the House of Lords. However, an anonymous letter warning a Catholic lord to stay away from Parliament raised suspicion, and authorities discovered the explosives on November 5. Fawkes was caught guarding the gunpowder, tortured, and executed along with his fellow plotters. The plot’s failure led to increased persecution of Catholics in England and is commemorated annually on Guy Fawkes Night.
