The Full Circle Nine Gallery (FC9) will feature José Luís Cabrera in “Roots & Traditions” as part of the First Friday art tour at the Full Circle Nine Gallery (FC9), 6-9pm on Friday, May 2nd. Admission and parking are free.
José Luís Cabrera, celebrating his Latino heritage through the eyes of Latino families, will present a collection of acrylic paintings on canvas, some also combining mixed media, such as gold leaf and aerosol paint. This show is Cabrera’s exploration of how his life has been influenced by the culture of both the United States and Mexico.
“People and communities change constantly, but the traditions and cultures that influence them remain constant. I want my show to celebrate the beauty of those traditions and how the merging of cultures is so influential,” Cabrera said.
About José Luís Cabrera
José Luís Cabrera, an “informally trained” artist, was born in the United States, a US citizen with Mexican parents. Cabrera has lived in both the United States and Mexico, where his mother was an artist. Before she passed away, she had officially completed art school and her son has been inspired by her commitment while on his own artist journey. Cabrera is also inspired by the artists around him, often learning from other artists’ online video, or in conversation with local artists about how and why they create. New to displaying his own art, he’s only begun sharing it with others in the past year. He believes his show can help act as a driver of valuable conversations regarding diversity, culture, and inclusiveness.
“I started trying to communicate with art a long time ago, but it wasn’t something I felt I was able to focus on due to competing interests like work and family,” Cabrera said. “Eventually, though, I started to make time for myself and painting. I gained confidence that what I wanted to say was important. I especially thought it was important since Latino artists seem underrepresented in a lot of venues.”
