The Full Circle Nine Gallery (FC9) will feature Rochelle Vega in “Fluidity and Form” as part of the July First Friday art tour.
Factory Arts District North will host a First Thursday on July 3rd, in light of the holiday. FC9 will welcome visitors on both evenings, July 3rd and 4th, 6-9pm. Admission and parking are free.
“This show feels like the culmination of the phoenix rising from the ashes. Cliché, I know, but cliches exist for a reason,” Vega said, of her mostly abstract collection. “In my fourth decade of life, I feel like I am always starting over yet again. This may be my 17th life already. I found that I had lived in survival mode for so long…I forgot my art for a couple of years. I was reminded of this part of my life by a very dear human who, with gentle and constant nudging and reassuring, eased me back in front of the canvas. I have worked hard to make my way into the vibrant art scene of Indianapolis.
About Rochelle Vega
The Russiaville native and Ball State English literature grad is pretty upfront about her background, not just as an artist, but as a human.
“I began seriously and consistently painting in 2017, which coincides with my sobriety date, July 17th, 2017,” Vega said. “Hi, I’m Rochelle and I’m an alcoholic. I’m very loud and proud about my recovery from active alcoholism.
Vega often feels her emotions in colors, and it is therapeutic for her to get those colors onto a canvas. She works quickly, but goes with the flow, embracing whatever forms that present themselves into the paint.
“I find this very much mirrors the human experience, at least, my human experience. I have had many plans and visions of and for my life…They rarely seem to go to plan, and I find myself continually working with what happens to be before me. In art and in life, I am flying by the seat of my paints,” Vega said.
While this show will feature abstracts built around the fluid pour technique, Vega mixes her paint with various additional additives to achieve the desired consistency for the piece. She has also recently expanded her repertoire over the last year to include mixed media, collage, and printmaking. She especially loves creating botanical prints with cuttings from her garden.
