The Full Circle Nine Gallery (FC9) will feature Sarah Rae Cote in “These Are My People” as part of the First Friday art tour at the Full Circle Nine Gallery (FC9), 6-9pm on Friday, November 1st. Admission and parking are free.
“In a way, it’s being social without being social,” Cote explained of her art. “I enjoy drawing contour lines of people. They can be especially blind-contour when the subjects are in motion, dancing and enjoying themselves. Sometimes, I too am dancing as I draw them. I love that the simple execution of a scribble can capture the essence of a person or moment, and occasionally it will make me giggle with delight as I survey the room.”
Primarily working with paint, Sarah Rae Cote documents her world in bright, bold colors, as those are what make her eyes dance the way she does when she’s watching and choosing her next model.
About Sarah Rae Cote
Sarah Rae Cote grew up in Indianapolis, and while focused on art growing up, she studied sociology, psychology, anthropology, and communication. She feels this show combines all of those passions, and in a way, the show’s story started long ago.
“I’ve been drawing everyone in the classroom since the school days,” Cote said. “We had to sit still, it was perfect to practice. I learned of blind-contour drawing when I took a Saturday class at the old Herron in 1999. I’ve been doing them so long that they don’t look as abstract anymore.”
Cote will often go to a location, usually a coffee shop or pub, that feels captivating enough as an inspiration, with favorites often being hip hop nights, as ‘the DJ’s are excellent, and the crowd is authentic.’ Those locations and conditions are powerfully inspirational for Cote as an artist, as she circles the crowd often with a sketchbook in hand, but lately with a bag full of stretched canvas, ‘looking wild.’
“I love people. I love watching people. I find them fascinating and I hope that by sharing pictures of the people I love in my city, that it will spread more love of the people in my city and end up with appreciation for one another. We are all just trying to get along each day, and I think art makes each day more beautiful and worth having,” Cote said.
