Tony Award winner Joaquina Kalukango solidified her mark in the theatrical sphere after earning a 2022 Tony Award for “Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical” for her groundbreaking lead role as Nelly O’Brien in the Broadway musical Paradise Square. Her nightly performance of “Let it Burn” was such a tour-de-force it would routinely stop the show for a standing ovation, and her live rendition at the Tony Awards telecast has since become a viral YouTube staple for Broadway fans worldwide. Before this, she earned a 2020 Tony Award nomination for her standout performance in the critically acclaimed Broadway production of Slave Play, garnering an Outer Critics Circle Award for “Best Actress.” Her astonishing acting, vocal outpouring, and Julliard-trained vocal chops earned her recognition from Broadway.com as one of the “top five performers of the year.”
Kalukango’s Broadway credits also include the final Witch in the closing cast of the much-lauded 2022 Into the Woods revival, The Color Purple (with Cynthia Erivo and Jennifer Hudson), Holler If Ya Hear Me, Godspell, and Hurt Village, which earned her another Drama Desk Award nomination. She also starred in several “City Center Encores!” productions, including Ragtime, Jelly’s Last Jam, and The Wild Party.
