The Full Circle Nine Gallery (FC9) will feature father-daughter pair Steve Block and Dawn Cooper in “Next Chapters—an Art Journey” as part of the October First Friday art tour, Friday, October 3rd, 6-9pm. Admission and parking are free.
Steve Block works wood and Dawn Cooper plies paint, and together, they celebrate the creative nature of their family, and consider the historic representations of father-daughter art paths. They will present their “next chapter,” combining drawings dating back to college years, handmade furniture, handcrafted pens, and acrylic paintings and resin work.
“My dad got me interested in art in my teens,” Cooper said. He took me to art galleries and explained art theory and the different genres to me. I don’t think I truly appreciated it outside of how cool I thought his art was until I started my own art journey in my late 40’s.”
“I hoped to make functional art furniture as my retirement career,” Block said. “I’ve had a few injuries lately, so after healing, I decided to work on something smaller. A client asked me to clean out their husband’s shed and it was full to the rafters with wooden pen-making supplies and equipment! Now, I’m exploring a new kind of functionality in my art.”
About Dawn Cooper and Steven Block
Dawn Cooper describes herself as a hippy and a nerd, while holding down a job in the legal field, surrounded by spreadsheets, during the day. But off the clock, she discovered she had a knack for painting after working through a difficult time via art therapy. Cooper confides that really, this show is an excuse to showcase her artwork along with her father’s, while bringing visitors to a joyful art space.
Steve Block studied sculpture at Ball State, and spent his career building or remodeling houses, including historically restoring several Ball family properties around Muncie. He’s influenced in shaker, arts & crafts, contemporary, and mid-century modern styles, and if his daughter asks, he will always be at her side in a show.
