A Tony Award-winning play with jazz at its heart gets a fitting setting this month as SiteLines Indy presents Warren Leight’s Side Man at the Chatterbox on Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. The show features live jazz performed by a combo assembled by local pianist Christopher Pitts.

Side Man centers on the family of a jazz trumpet player in an era of changing tastes and fortunes. Told through the eyes of the side man’s son, the story considers the cost of dedication to a craft and the weight a child (and, eventually, a man) must carry when a marriage falls apart. The play won the 1999 Tony Award for Best Play and was a finalist for that year’s Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

Developed by Lou Harry and John Thomas – also the creators of Going … Going … Gone, the Live Auction Comedy – SiteLines Indy is a theatre production company dedicated to staging plays in locations that resonate with their themes and settings. Previous productions were staged at locations including Hilbert Circle Theatre, the studios of WFYI and Indiana Landmarks Center.

Harry directs this production, which includes actors Sara Castillo, Ian Cruz, Nathalie Cruz, Brian Hartz, Tyler Lyons, Zach Stonerock and John Thomas.

Limited seating: $20 guaranteed-entry tickets are available by contacting John Thomas at johnbthomas@att.net; any remaining tickets will be sold at the door for $10.
