Sand is the main component of Derrick Carter’s mixed-media artwork. He compares his rough surfaces to the grit required to persevere in life. With Surviving 2020, Carter depicts a young woman’s eyes above a mask adorned by butterflies. “She is stressed and tired from all the restrictions,” Carter says, “but is protected with hope and believes that she will again fly high.” Carter’s 2021 has included an Indianapolis International Airport display of his “200 Years” project commemorating the city’s bicentennial.
