About the Program

Four central Indiana-based artists will be selected as Equity Ambassadors to assist in evaluating how Arts Council of Indianapolis policies and practices impact individual artists of color in Indianapolis. The ambassadors will employ simple research methods using the lens of inclusion, diversity, equity, access, and sustainability to evaluate all artist-related activity including grant and fellowship programs (Beckmann Emerging Artist Fellowship, Creative Renewal Arts Fellowship, DeHaan Artist of Distinction Award, etc.), presenting venues (Gallery 924 and Indianapolis Artsgarden), Artist Services programs, and public art. Their findings will inform a series of recommendations to be considered and implemented by the Arts Council for stronger and more inclusive engagement with communities of color.

The Equity Ambassadors program is funded in part by an Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. To find out more about how National Endowment for the Arts grants impact individuals and communities, visit www.arts.gov.

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of research methods will the ambassadors be expected to utilize?

We anticipate using simple research methods that include scripted interviews and focus groups, surveys, and observations as a part of the assessment of Arts Council programs and services.

Do I have to have research experience in order to be eligible for this program?

While this program has a preference toward individuals who have research experience, we also recognize that many artists, and specifically artists of color, have lacked equal access to opportunities of this nature. Therefore, we are open to applications from individuals who may not have direct experience but have a strong interest in this work.

Does this program have a preference toward emerging artists or more established artists?

We encourage artists at all stages of their career with relevant experience to apply. The only requirement is that applicants have at least two years’ experience as a professional working artist.

Can I apply for the Equity Ambassadors program and apply for other Arts Council grant programs?

Yes. Participation in the Equity Ambassadors program does not impact your eligibility for other Arts Council programs, including grants and fellowships, public art and other commissions, and other contracted services.

Do I have to have a prior relationship with the Arts Council in order to apply?

No. We highly encourage those who have limited or no interaction with the Arts Council’s programs and services to apply to this program.
