Call for Local Artists in the Far Eastside, Martindale – Brightwood, Arlington Woods, and the Near Eastside

Deadline: 02/16/2025

Call for Local Artists in the Far Eastside, Martindale – Brightwood, Arlington Woods, and the Near Eastside!

Ignite change in your community! This project is a unique opportunity to photograph risk and resilience in your community by participating in a photovoice study with researchers at Indiana University – Indianapolis.

Apply via the Qualtrics link by Sunday, February 16th, 11:59 pm EST, to be considered. Applicants will be notified by February 22nd.

Project Description: In this project, 12 local artists from Far Eastside, Martindale – Brightwood, Arlington Woods, and Near Eastside communities will document risk and resilience in their community through photographs and narratives.

Photovoice is understood as a process in which grassroots communities are asked to document their lived experience through photos and discuss these photos, with the aim of identifying and representing their community, promoting dialogue, encouraging actions, and potentially influencing decision-making on the policy level. Sounds exciting, right?!?

The photographs and narratives that emerge from this project will serve as powerful advocacy tools to raise awareness of the resources that promote resilience equity in Indy communities, as well as the challenges that further expose resilience inequities. The Portraits of Resilience exhibition will be featured in neighborhood community venues in the Far Eastside, Martindale – Brightwood, Arlington Woods, and the Near Eastside to elevate the contributions and voices of local artists and contributors to this project, culminating in a final exhibition in Downtown Indianapolis.

Eligibility: Local artists over the age of 18 who currently live in the Far Eastside, Martindale – Brightwood, Arlington Woods, or the Near Eastside. Participants will be expected to capture photographs on a phone camera or digital camera and regularly upload them to a collaborative technology tool used throughout the project. Artists will retain all intellectual property rights to their photographs.

A total of 12 local artists will be chosen to participate in this project. Participation includes: (1) meeting once in September with the project lead and participating artists, (2) photographing risk and resilience in your specific community from mid-September to early November, (3) uploading your photographs to the collaborative technology used to facilitate this project, (4) participating in a “problem-posing to problem-solving” in-person session with project lead and participating artists in November, and (5) participating in a local exhibition of your work in March 2025. Participants will be paid $250 for their participation in two installments. The first participation stipend of $50 will be provided following the in-person kick-off meeting in September. The second participation stipend of $200 will be provided following the in-person photovoice listening session in early November. The project will also cover professional printing and framing of your Portraits of Resilience exhibition photographs. Diverse applicants are encouraged to apply!
