City of Westfield Seeks Artist for Light-based Public Art

The City of Westfield (“City”) is proud to partner with GANGGANG, a cultural development firm centering beauty, equity, and culture in cities, to lead the creation of a distinctive new public artwork in Westfield, Indiana.

BUDGET:  $250,000

ELIGIBILITY: Artists age 18 or over legally able to work in the United States

DEADLINE:  September 22, 2025

Artwork Goals:

  • The final artwork should be a large scale, light-based art installation with immersive and/or interactive qualities; the piece must be visually captivating in day and night hours.
  • The artwork must capture Westfield’s Quaker roots and the city’s ties to the Underground Railroad. Note: Artist(s) will have an opportunity to review existing research (City and GANGGANG) and to conduct research and engage with the community as part of this process.
  • The artwork must reflect Westfield’s thriving community today, in addition to paying tribute to the city’s welcoming history.

Project Timeline

  • September 21, 2025, 11:59 p.m.: Statement of Qualifications due
  • September 26, 2025: Semi-finalists selected
  • October 27, 2025: Proposals due
  • November 5, 2025: Authorization to sign the contract/ select artist (Parks Board Meeting)
  • November 2025 – April 2026: Design + Community Engagement Activity
  • May 2026 – 2027 Fabrication
  • Installation (May 2027)

Application Requirements: Artists may apply as a team and submit a shared portfolio of work examples.

  1. Cover letter detailing interest and ability to complete the project.
  2. Resume outlining professional qualifications to demonstrate experience with a public art or installation project of similar scope.
  3. Artist statement (300 words maximum)
  4. Bio (max 400 words)
  5. Work examples: six JPEG images of work with title, size, medium, date, and price/commission value, if applicable, along with a brief narrative about the meaning of the artwork
  6. Names and contact information for three professional references
