Exterior Artwork at First Baptist Church

Deadline: 09/01/2025

First Baptist Church of Indianapolis invites artists to submit public art qualifications for the design and installation of exterior artwork on the southeast facade of the First Baptist Church building located at 8600 N. College Avenue, Indianapolis, IN. The wall faces the intersection of 86th Street and College Avenue and is visible to pedestrians and vehicles passing through the Nora neighborhood or entering the First Baptist Church campus from the south or east. The leadership of First Baptist Church of Indianapolis intends for the design and content of the artwork to reflect the congregation’s history and impact on the community and/or to express the congregation’s core values of inclusive diversity, effective collaboration, health and wellness, and justice and peace.

The artwork envisioned will be installed on the southeast facade of the First Baptist Church building. (Please note that paint cannot be applied directly to the brick surface.) The format and medium will be selected by the artist, but could include a permanent mural, temporary (vinyl) mural, or commercially printed banner(s). The artist will work with a small group of church members to explore and develop themes and central images for the artwork. The artwork should be able to communicate its themes to people of different cultural, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Interested artists should submit their completed applications to First Baptist Church of Indianapolis, including all of the following materials:

1. Letter of Interest – Applicants should introduce themselves, provide contact information, and describe why they are interested in the project, their approach to creating public art, and any past relevant experience.

2. Current Resume or CV – Provide a resume that summarizes the applicant’s training, qualifications, and relevant past experience.

3. List of References – Provide at least two references (including current contact information) who are familiar with the artist’s recent work. References will be contacted in the last stage of the selection process.

4. Images of Past Work – Provide up to ten images of past completed artwork that showcases the applicant’s style, range, and significant themes.

5. Proposed Budget – Provide a preliminary budget proposal that includes estimated costs for the artist’s fee, design expenses, incidental costs, materials, and installation. The total budget should not exceed $25,000.
