Just Transition Visioning Project Seeks Artists

Calling all creatives! Are you interested in submitting your work to help us envision a greener, brighter future for the Northwest Indiana region? If so, we want to hear from you!

Join Just Transition Northwest Indiana (JTNWI) and partner artists William Estrada, Kaitlyn Stancy, and Emily Essling in a Just Transition Visioning Project to center community voices and help us dream of what a just and equitable transition to a sustainable future free of pollution looks like in Northwest Indiana.

About the Project & Guidelines

We are launching this initiative to invite artists and creatives to dream with us a Just Transition. Artists located in Northwest Indiana will be prioritized in this project.

We invite artists from the following disciplines to submit to this project:

  • Visual art (e.g., painting, sculpture, engraving, photography, drawing, illustration, graphic design, and mixed techniques)* the use of eco-friendly, upcycled, and repurposed materials is highly encouraged
  • Creative writing/poetry/spoken word
  • Short film
  • Dance
  • Music

  • You must live, be from, or have ties to the Calumet Region: Chicagoland to Northwest Indiana.
  • For art to be considered, it must fit within and draw on themes of the Just Transition Framework.

What is a Just Transition?

Just Transition Northwest Indiana was born out of the Just Transition Framework, describing a transition from the carbon-based, capitalist economy of today to the renewable, regenerative economy of tomorrow. A Just Transition requires good jobs and a healthy environment where everyone can live and thrive. It means no one is left behind in the transition beyond fossil fuel-produced energy.

JTNWI will accept as many submissions as possible before the deadline. Once our team, comprising a host committee of artists, deliberates and selects the winning submissions, they will receive a confirmation. Submissions will be publicly displayed for an artist exhibition showcase in July, with installation beginning on July 1, 2024. The artist must drop off and pick up work at designated dates and times. The deadline for submission is Sunday, June 9, 2024, at 11:59 PM CST.

This is step 1 in a two-step submission process. The first form is a general interest form, and the second form, which you will also be directed to upon competition for this form, is where you will upload your submission by Sunday, June 9, 2024, at 11:59 PM CST.
