The Indy Arts Council seeks to reproduce existing work by visual and literary artists in a new round of vinyl murals installed on vacant Indy storefronts, starting in spring 2026. Central Indiana artists are invited to suggest existing artworks for this program.

- Compensation: If selected, artists will receive a single $250 participation fee plus a $250 licensing fee for each image used (example: 1 artwork used = $500; 2 artworks used = $750, 3 artworks used = $1,000, etc.)
Interested artists may apply to be a part of the pool of potential artworks for the upcoming 2026-27 program year. Storefront murals will be located primarily in downtown Indianapolis, and possibly in other areas of the city. The initial artworks will be installed in March 2026; additional artwork will continue to be installed throughout 2026 as sites become available, and will remain on view into 2027.
The Sidewalk Galleries program is supported by the Indy Arts Council, Downtown Indy Alliance, Indiana Sports Corp, and other civic partners.

Eligibility
- Artists must be 18 years or older—we can only contract with artists over 18. Exceptional youth artwork may be considered if a parent or other legal guardian is willing and able to contract with the Arts Council on the youth’s behalf and supervise their participation.
- Artists must reside in one of the following central Indiana counties: Marion, Hendricks, Boone, Hamilton, Morgan, Johnson, Shelby, and Hancock counties.
About the 2026-27 Sidewalk Galleries Program
From April 3-6, 2026, Indianapolis will host the largest celebration of college basketball in history, welcoming not only the 2026 NCAA Men’s Final Four for the ninth time but also the Division II Championship, Division III Championship, and the NIT Championship. This unprecedented convergence of national title events will bring teams, fans, media, and visitors from across the country together for a celebration of the sport.
As Indianapolis prepares for this historic lineup of championships, Downtown will be transformed into an energetic, walkable festival environment that showcases the city’s spirit of hospitality, innovation, and community pride. Fan experiences, public activations, and cultural programming will immerse visitors and residents in the excitement of championship basketball and celebrate our storied history as a top host city.
Theme and Content
There is no single conceptual theme for this project.
- Basketball imagery is suggested, but not required.
- If you choose to provide basketball-themed imagery, keep it generic. We’d love to see your interpretation of the thrill of college-level basketball competition.
- Interpretations highlighting Indiana basketball (particularly high-school basketball) are welcome! (but see below)
- Do NOT provide imagery depicting specific player portraits, any team names, any team logos, any team uniforms, or combinations of colors or slogans that are associated with specific basketball teams.
- Do not include the NCAA logo in any form.
- We appreciate artwork that helps convey an impression of the broad variety of people who play basketball.
Visual artists should send images of their best work. Literary artists should send texts, preferably poetry although short prose selections are acceptable; we may select and compensate graphic designers to partner with literary artists to render their texts as works of visual art.
Artworks will be selected based on subject matter, style, desirability for a certain site or type of site, and ability to showcase the talent and creativity of local artists.
This call is for artworks that haven’t already been curated into the program. If you were notified that your work has been accepted into the 2024-25 program but you haven’t yet been assigned a location, we will continue to consider your artwork for 2026-27. You do not need to reapply! Artworks that were selected in previous rounds but were not installed will receive priority for the available spaces.
If you recently applied for the Indianapolis International Airport’s Call for Licensed Artwork and you wish to have the same set of images considered for this program, please email jmoore@indyarts.org and we can duplicate your application. However, if you want to make changes to your image selections, please create a new application for this opportunity.
Timeline
- Wednesday, December 3, 2025: Call released
- Sunday, January 25, 2026: 11:59 p.m.: Deadline for applications (click “submit” by this date and time!)
- February 16 – 20: Applicants notified if their work is to be included in the program.
- Starting March 1: As artworks are placed in locations around Indianapolis, artists will be notified, contracted, and compensated.
- If artist does not already have a high-resolution image available, photography will be scheduled at Arts Council expense
- The Arts Council will take care of all production and installation expenses. The artist is not responsible for these arrangements or costs!
- Through December, 2026: Sidewalk Galleries installed. Display dates may vary according to the specific location. Most work will remain installed through the end of 2026; some may continue into 2027.
Application Instructions
Apply ONLY through the online application form, available at http://indyarts.grantplatform.com If you do not already have an account on the platform (it’s free!), you will have the chance to create one when you apply.
- You will be able to save an unfinished application and return to it later.
- You will be able to edit a submitted application up until the application deadline.
- Applicants may upload one document (DOC, DOCX, or PDF format) containing up to five short poems and/or excerpts from longer poems. Suggested poems may be published or unpublished, as long as they are the original work of the applicant, the applicant owns the rights to the poem, and the applicant has the right to allow third parties to publish the poems.
- Applicants may upload up to five images of existing visual work. Please propose existing, completed artwork for consideration. Do not suggest unfinished artwork, artwork in process, or artwork that you plan to start if selected.
- If your work is identified for the project, you will be asked to provide any existing high-resolution files ready for printing OR deliver the artwork for high-resolution photography within two weeks of being notified of inclusion in the project. Please do not apply unless you have the ability to meet this aggressive timeline!

- Procure que sean genéricas. NO proporcione imágenes que muestren retratos de jugadores de baloncesto específicos, nombres de equipos, logotipos de equipos, uniformes de equipos, ni combinaciones de colores o lemas asociados con equipos de baloncesto específicos.
- Nos encantaría ver su interpretación de la emoción de la competición universitaria de baloncesto.
- No incluya el logotipo de la NCAA de ninguna forma.
- Apreciamos las obras de arte que ayuden a transmitir la idea de la amplia variedad de personas que juegan al baloncesto.
Los artistas visuales deben enviar imágenes de sus mejores obras. Los artistas literarios deben enviar textos, preferiblemente poesía, aunque se aceptan selecciones breves de prosa. Podemos seleccionar y compensar a diseñadores gráficos para que colaboren con artistas literarios y representen sus textos como obras de arte visual.

¿Debo postularme?
Esta convocatoria es para obras de arte que aún no hayan sido seleccionadas en el programa. Si le notificamos que su obra fue aceptada en el programa 2024-25, pero aún no se le ha asignado una ubicación, seguiremos considerando su obra para el programa 2026-27. ¡No necesita volver a presentarla! Las obras seleccionadas en convocatorias anteriores pero que no se instalaron, tendrán prioridad para las plazas disponibles.

Calendario
