Westfield Artistic Benches Program

The City of Westfield is seeking artists to design and paint original artwork on up to four (4) benches in high-traffic locations throughout the city. This project aims to celebrate Westfield’s heritage, parks, and trail system with eye-catching designs. Artists are encouraged to draw inspiration from Westfield’s history, signature events, and physical environment.

Deadline for Submission:
Friday, August 30, 2024, at 11:59 p.m. EST

Eligibility:

To be eligible, artists must:

• Meet all project requirements (see below).
• Be 18 years or older.
• Adhere to a strict budget and timeline.
• Provide proof of appropriate liability insurance for the project duration (referrals available).

Project Requirements:

• Submit a concept design with the qualification submission.
• Coordinate with the City of Westfield for design approval and installation dates.
• Paint and seal the artwork on a concrete bench.

Project Budget:

• Commission fee: $1,000 per bench, including all expenses (design fees, materials, production, labor).
• Payment schedule: 50% at the project start, 50% upon completion (up to 30 days processing time).

Resources:

Electronic copies of bench elevation drawings are available upon request.

Selection Process:

Submit qualifications to Kayla Arnold (karnold@westfield.in.gov) by 11:59 p.m. EST on Friday, August 30, 2024. A selection committee will review submissions and select finalists. One artist may be chosen to paint multiple benches, and teams are welcome. Contracts will be provided for selected artists, containing legal provisions as per Indiana law.

Selection Criteria:

• Technical Ability: Professionalism, skill with materials and techniques, and capacity to meet project requirements.
• Artistic Quality: Innovation, creativity, and contextual appropriateness of past work.

Project Timeline:

• Release RFQ: August 5, 2024
• Submission Deadline: August 30, 2024
• Selection Committee Review: September 2-5, 2024
• Finalist Selection and Contracts: By September 6, 2024
• Design Phase: September 6 – October 3, 2024
• Installation: Early to mid-October 2024

How to Apply:

Submit the following to Kayla Arnold at karnold@westfield.in.gov:

• Resume: Artistic resume.
• Cover Letter: Interest in the project, any personal/professional connection to Westfield, and relevant experience.
• Concept Design: Digital concept design for the bench.
• Examples of Previous Artwork: 2-10 digital images (.jpg or .pdf) of past work, with at least one project relevant to this context. Limit each image to 2MB.
• Image Information Sheet: Title, completion date, client/neighborhood/site name, total artwork budget, and a brief description for each project.

Submission Delivery:

Submissions can be emailed, shared via Dropbox, or hand-delivered on a USB drive to Kayla Arnold at:

Note: CDs, DVDs, or printed items are not accepted. Dropbox share requests and USB deliveries must be time-stamped by 11:59 p.m. EST on August 30, 2024. Late submissions will not be considered.
