Art at the Airport

In collaboration with the Indianapolis Airport Authority, the Indy Arts Council oversees the award-winning temporary exhibition program at Indianapolis International Airport. Since 2013, the Arts Council has curated rotating installations in display cases throughout the main terminal and commissioned original works for the video screens above the main escalator and staircase.

The following shows will be on display November 2024 – March 2025.

Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library

Established in 2009, the Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library (KVML) celebrates Vonnegut’s enduring legacy through displays, educational programs for all ages, and events locally and nationally, all of which reflect his wit, wisdom, and humanistic spirit. The museum not only preserves artifacts and works of Vonnegut’s life but also serves as a community center promoting the values of free expression, critical thinking, and creativity that Vonnegut so passionately championed. Exhibitions center around Vonnegut’s life, education, free speech, and jazz. A current exhibition features information, photos, and artifacts describing KVML’s place on Indiana Avenue, Indianapolis’ historically African American cultural district.

On display through January

CONCOURSE A

Earthly Visions

EARTHLY VISIONS is the third installment in Rebeka Sweetland’s mural series, EVERYTHING IS NEW. Discovering the glimpses of light, wonder, and life around us and translating them into immersive, colorful scenes is meant to draw the viewer in and remind them to slow down and remember the sheer wonder of what it’s like to experience our world and relationships for the very first time. Like many others, Sweetland has dealt with child loss. After a third devastating loss in 2020, she remembers staring out at her neighbor’s tree like a lost soul. In time, the people around her and the environment she existed in helped draw her back into a state of healing and hope. She mentions her losses, not as a sob story, but as a redemptive reminder to strive to live and to find wonder again, because there is so much of it all around us.

Icons of Revolution: The Visual Language of Hip Hop

This exhibit blends poetry and photography to celebrate the power of Hip Hop’s visual legacy. In “Icons of Revolution”, each image— flyers from the genre’s early block parties, the sharp lines of Grand Wizzard Theodore’s turntables, Grandmaster Flash hovering over his own, the booming presence of Flavor Flav’s clock, and the resonance of the iconic boombox—serves as a portal into moments of transformation. These objects, often ordinary on the surface, became cultural symbols that united communities, challenged norms, and redefined expression.

OUTDOORS

Transitions

This ambitious, abstract composition stretches across 14,000 square feet of construction fencing at the Indianapolis International Airport. Transitions pays homage to Indy icons, such as checkered racing flags and the rainbow carpet from the old airport terminal. The artwork is made from more than 300,000 Put-In-Cups, a recyclable plastic product normally used for school spirit displays.
