Christel DeHaan Lifetime Achievement Award

Anthony Radford

Anthony Radford is a mixed media artist who draws from the complex interplay between natural and hand-made objects. His work is an exploration of the boundaries and interactions between different materials, textures, and forms, creating a dialogue that changes conventional perceptions and invites viewers to see the familiar in new ways.

In his creative process, Anthony integrates a variety of materials such as paper, fabric, wood, metal, and organic elements, each chosen for its unique narrative contribution to his pieces. Through layering, deconstruction, and reconstruction, he reveals the hidden beauty in the mundane and overlooked, transforming everyday objects.

Anthony’s art is deeply influenced by life, history, music, political and social content, memory, identity, and transformation. He is fascinated by the ways in which personal and collective histories are embedded in the physical world around us and seeks to uncover these stories through his work. By blending traditional and contemporary techniques, he strives to create pieces that resonate with viewers on an emotional level.

ARTI Award Artist

Mary Mindiola

Mary Mindiola is originally from the city of San Cristóbal in the State of Táchira, in Venezuela, the 4th daughter of an American mother and a Venezuelan father.  She studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids, MI.

A vacation trip to the Caribbean made Mary very aware of the immense plastic pollution problem the world is facing.  After a lot of thought and consideration she completely eliminated all paint from her works, using only materials already available to help the pollution problem in her own small way.  This new medium turned into a serious challenge and a passion.

Mary’s work uses only glue, scissors, and magazines, with a protective finish coating. It is a bright, colorful array of random cut shapes, letters and forms with hidden messages, words and images.  Each piece is a very important part of the whole, and is a reminder that we are all  just a small part of a much bigger picture that is our world.

SERVING ARTS ORGANIZATIONS

In 2023, Indy Arts Council invested $1.5 million in 85+ arts and culture organizations, helping to support the events that 6.5 million residents and visitors enjoy each year. The Arts Council administers funds through the City of Indianapolis’ Annual Grants Program, and we expanded the program in 2023 to support a record 85 organizations.

Last year, our IDEA Learning Series convened hundreds of arts administrators and board members to discuss DEIA challenges and opportunities. Our team also provides research, public policy resources, and marketing support to the Indianapolis arts & culture sector.

SERVING ARTISTS

In 2023, the Indy Arts Council invested $5.6K in the careers of 700 central Indiana artists through professional development, paid opportunities and networking events. Some of our signature programs include the Art & Soul festival, the Creative Renewal Arts Fellowships, and the Welcome Race Fans artworks that greet Indy 500 fans each May.

Our Gallery 924 exhibits work by Indiana artists and gathers arts lovers for popular shows like DeHaan Artists of Distinction and TINY. The Arts Council also operates the Indianapolis Artsgarden–an iconic venue in the heart of downtown that showcases student and professional performers year-round and hosts private events.

SERVING INDIANAPOLIS

Working with local and national artists, Indy Arts Council helped create numerous new public artworks in 2023. These artworks don’t just make our city more vibrant; they connect us to our neighborhoods and stories.

Some of our most visible recent projects include the NBA All-Star activations, Bicentennial Unity Plaza mural, the permanent “Art of the Game” exhibition at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and the KIND Gallery at Indianapolis International Airport.

The city’s nonprofit arts & culture sector also generates $524 million in annual economic impact, serves 6.5 million residents and visitors annually, and supports 7,500 full-and part-time jobs.
