November 2016

Screen_Shot_2016-10-06_at_2.39.27_PM.jpgThe Speedway Redevelopment Comission, in association with the Arts Council of Indianapolis and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc., commissioned Anderson, IN artist Arlon Bayliss to create the artwork, Seeds of Light, for a new pocket park near the Main Street junction with the P & E Trail in Speedway, Indiana. The pocket park is an important transition between the Main Street redevelopment area and the new entrance to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The Town of Speedway, Speedway Trails, Speedway Parks, the Speedway Redevelopment Commission and the Speedway Arts Council worked with the artist, landscape architecture firm Landstory, the Arts Council of Indianapolis, and project director Keep Indianapolis Beautiful to develop a design for the pocket park and the artwork. Plantings, benches, and pathways provide a beautiful rest stop and backdrop for the artwork, which highlights the Sister Cities relationships between Speedway and the motorsport towns of Motegi, Japan and Varano De Melegari, Italy. Speedway envisioned the trailhead to be an iconic space welcoming students from its Sister Cities exchanges and indeed all international visitors to the town.
