For this design, artist Christina Hollering found inspiration in the story of the Southdale-based Maschmeyer family. Ann Maschmeyer’s account of the family’s cultivation and distribution of thousands of peonies to brides, florists, and those honoring loved ones resonated deeply with her. She loved the vivid imagery she painted, of vibrant mounds of colorful peonies. Along with peonies, clusters of tomatoes are a reminder of the vegetable crops grown within the greenhouses of Southdale. Hollering complemented this imagery with the backdrop of a stunning Indiana sunset—a shared experience with our ancestors, who too marveled at the beauty of such evenings.
