Welcome Race Fans is a collaborative project of the Arts Council of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to connect visual art and artists to this historic race. One of the more familiar and iconic visuals associated with May in Indianapolis is the blanketing of the city with "Welcome Race Fans" signs and banners. Our project builds upon and pays tribute to the annual tradition of Welcome Race Fans signs with original artwork created by Indiana artists. Artists are commissioned to create their own version of the beloved Welcome Race Fans signs, using their own unique style and materials. The result is an infusion of different artistic voices and imagery to welcome the world to Indianapolis and celebrate the month of May. Each sign is unique and represents the vast diversity of styles and artists in Indiana. These original works of art tour the city during the month leading up to the race. The artworks travel to places throughout central Indiana including the Indianapolis International Airport, the Indianapolis Artsgarden, community and cultural organizations, restaurants, hotels, galleries, businesses, and, of course, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
In an effort to build on the success of the previous two years, we are announcing this year’s program for the 102nd Running of the Indy 500. For 2018, the program will consist of five artists creating a version of a “Welcome Race Fans” sign in their own unique materials, process, and style.
