"The Creative Renewal Fellowship renewed me by providing time and resources for an evolution of new work, new ideas and a new direction for my life and career as an artist. Above all, the fellowship taught me that the work is really never finished - it is only the beginning of a new chapter."
For her fellowship experience, Carol sought to create a film on her family's history and ancestry as well as the production of four new works of art related to the theme Southern Threads, Northern Footsteps: Meeting Somewhere in the Middle. "This fellowship provided me with the time to closely examine a part of my ancestry, history and family and unearthed so much that was buried in my memory and in archives around the country. In some cases, the project brought to light historical information completely unknown to me, or my immediate family."
Once completed, Carol plans to hold screenings of the final film in Indianapolis, Birmingham and Baltimore. She is working on a short book that will include the artwork produced during the past two years as well as research, images and recordings of family stories, entitled The Art of Love. "Education, shared values and creative approaches to daily life were delineated with each story I heard. It was those universal discoveries that I look forward to sharing with others when the film and artworks are ready for public view."
