Morris, Cathy

“My perspective was dramatically altered because of this grant. I witnessed my world of original music integrated into an entirely new environment across the ocean crossing language barriers and cultural boundaries. I must say my scope of artistic possibilities had been diminishing until this trip after which I was again able to imagine endless futures for my art.”

Electronic violinist Cathy traveled to Mallorca, Spain to hear her original compositions Fleckish, Bayou Self, and Watch Out performed by a youth orchestra conducted by violinist Leah Wolfe-Garcia. Cathy had the opportunity to shadow Leah at her music programs in Valldemosa, Deià, and Palma. She felt completely at home in Spain and had the opportunity to meet with students and witness them playing her original music. Cathy shared music with the students and faculty for five days and had the wonderful opportunity to explore the culture, history, and beaches of Mallorca. She relaxed on the beach, soaked up the sun, and read The Music Lesson by bassist Victor L. Wooten. Back in the states, she also toured the Globe Institute in San Francisco where she learned more about a new passion that she is exploring focused on sound and vibrational healing.

“The entire experience provided by this grant gave me a sense of perspective regarding my own accomplishments to date (which are sometimes easily forgotten as it is a constant necessity to focus on moving forward in order to make a living!), which in turn instilled a renewed confidence in my intuition and trust regarding my abilities. It spawned numerous paths of future possibilities regarding my existing orchestra charts, future writing, and my music for healing projects.” Cathy is currently in talks with Leah about future collaborations in Europe as well as furthering her Music for Wellness music and workshops.
